The Okeechobee Battlefield Historic State Park is located on a portion of the Okeechobee Battlefield, the site of the largest and bloodiest battle of the Second Seminole War (1835-1842). The second in a series of three wars, it was fought between white settlers and the Native American tribes and was also the longest and costliest of the wars in terms of both monetary expense and human casualties.
On Christmas Day in 1837, Col. Zachary Taylor led 800 soldiers on the 1st, 4th, and 6th US Army Infantry Regiments and Missouri Volunteers onto the banks of the Okeechobee. The site of that battle is now a state park, and each year, it's reenacted to pay homage to the soldiers and warriors who fought and died there.
